(Being Human: Forging Fields of Experience)》所提出的深刻問題。

Summary of Prof Kwok’s Speech

In his speech, Professor Kwok Kian Woon reflected on the profound questions raised by the exhibition Being Human: Forging Fields of Experience.
He highlighted the artist’s exploration of the human condition and noted curator Dr. Susie Lingham’s thoughtful framing of the exhibition around the question: What does it mean to be human today?

This question, he remarked, is both philosophical and historical, especially in the context of today’s environmental crises and polarized politics.
While he admitted that he does not have the answers, he emphasized that great exhibitions aim to pose meaningful and thought-provoking questions.

Professor Kwok identified three dimensions of “being human”:

The Individual – our uniqueness.

The Self – the inner, personal dimension.

The Person – our relational existence, connected to others.

He drew attention to the Ironman / strong man sculpture at the entrance, which appears as a single, imposing figure from afar. However, on closer inspection, it is made up of countless small human figures.
This detail, he noted, powerfully conveys the relationship between the individual and the collective, connecting it to the ideas of the self and the person.

He also explored the concepts of icon, idol, and token:

Icon: an image pointing to deeper meanings beyond its surface, as in religious iconography.

Idol: a representation that can inspire reverence or destruction, raising the question of how to distinguish between meaningful icons and false idols.

Token: the overwhelming flood of images in today’s world—advertisements, social media, and more—that often lack deeper substance or meaning.

In closing, Professor Kwok reflected on the irony in Liu Po-Chun’s recurring figure of the Ironman / strong man.
While these figures symbolize strength and ideals, they also serve as a reminder of humanity’s capacity to justify harm in the name of good.
Through these works, Liu challenges us to reflect on our pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty, and how these enduring ideals can guide us in navigating an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
